About the Bass Horn

I will write more about bass horns another time. For now, it is sufficient to state that they were keyed brass instruments (as opposed to ones with pistons) that were most prominent in the 19th century. They are closely related to the serpent, and the Russian bassoon. They typically had a u shaped bore, as opposed to the bore of a serpent that winds back and forth. Sometimes they borrowed the construction of the contemporaneous bassoon, and other times they were made from brass.

Pictured on this page is a bass horn made by Jerome Wiss in 2021. I acquired it from Noah Gladstone at Brass Ark. Its body is is made from flamed maple, and is somewhat similar to a bassoon. It has an 8 inch brass bell.
