About Bodhran

18 inch Irish Bodhran drum by Meinl

Bodhran are the traditional frame drum of Ireland. Like many frame drums, they are made in a variety of different sizes. Small bodhran are only 10 inches in diameter, while the largest ones are more than two feet across. Typical instruments are between 14 and 18 inches wide. Modern Bodhran are deeper than many other frame drums. The instrument pictured here is roughly 4 inches deep and has a circumference of 18 inches. The drum head is traditionally made from goat skin and is tacked to the side of the drum.

The instrument pictured here is made for practical use, rather than being traditionally constructed. It is made by the Meinl company. I purchased it at a local percussion shop, the Baltimore Drum Company. It has a ring inside the frame that allows the drum to be tuned. This is particularly useful in environments in which the humidity fluctuates. The drum has a brace in the shape of a cross. This helps stabilize the frame, however, its shape can interfere with playing. Some players prefer drums with a single bar that acts as a brace.

Bodhran are typically played with wooden sticks called tippers. Several tippers are pictured here. They are roughly 7 inches in length.
